The latest researches of sexual life of Americans aged from 57 to 85 showed that that elderly people should not refuse sex. Quite the contrary, sexual activity helps them to stay healthy and vigorous. According to the results of a research, 40% of men aged 75-85 lead active sexual life, and every fourth of them has sex at least once a week. Aged women have sex less frequent-just 17% of the same age group. For years the medics avoided the topic of sex at nursing homes and masturbation among aged people. Many doctors and patients themselves alleged that with age the need and ability to have sex come to nought. The results of the latest research indicate the opposite: the age itself does not affect sexual attraction; those are rather the consequences of aging (health problems, drugs` side effects and the absence of a partner). In other words if a man keeps on being buoyant, healthy and sociable with age, he has more chances to enjoy sex for a longer time. Doctor John Morley from Sent-Luis University asserts that he made prosthesis of a penis for a man aged 98, who successfully used it till the age of 101. "The working life of our bodies has increased. Just 30 years ago physicians considered people above 60 to be old,-says Morley,-now my most patients are aged 80- 90". In our opinion the cause for this is the modern medicine and nutrition. In 1900 average duration of life was 47 years, while presently it is 75 years for men and 80 for women. Now a man aged 65 may count on another 20 years of life. Naturally at this age most people want to make up in terms of sex for the time lost because of working stress, crying children and apprehension of making a partner pregnant or getting pregnant. A research carried out among the British showed, that aged people are most sorry about spending too little time on sensual pleasures and fun in their youth. 70% of those surveyed confessed that if they could turn back the time of their youth, they would have spent more time on sex. The retirees admitted that most of all they would like to return the year when they had just graduated college and plunge into fun.
In 2004 Edward Laumann with a group of researchers started a large scale research of sexual life of Americans aged 57-85. The final results are expected to bring out the existing and future tendencies in this sphere. Two interim reports have been already published in American medical magazines.
